  1. Our story

Our story

Harambee Schools Kenya (HSK) is a registered UK charity; co-founded by Rob Breare and Will Snell in 1999, after both had spent six months in Kenya teaching on a gap year placement.  They had no experience at all of running a charity, but both had hands-on knowledge of the needs on the ground in Kenya, and of the educational system and so HSK begun.

Rob and Will handed over the charity to a board of trustees in 2014 and now the charity is run by a full-time CEO, overseen by an experienced board of trustees plus a network of volunteers.

Our work is making a long-term impact and real difference to the everyday schooling of thousands of children and their surrounding communities.

Our impact

  • Reduced hunger.
  • Increased school enrolment.
  • Improved attendance, concentration and learning.
  • Increased grades.
  • Encouraged an active reading culture.
  • Created safe and stimulating, learning environments.
  • Increased progression from primary to secondary school.
  • Improved health and wellbeing.
  • Encouraged community support for education.
  • Support for smallholder farmers.
  • Increased government recognition of the importance of education in the community.

Our people

Our team work to make HSK what it is and thrive as a charity - each bringing their own skills and insight to ensure things run like clockwork.  All of the team either here or Kenya, give up their time freely, to support education in Kenya.
