What do we offer?
We offer placements for volunteer teachers in poor schools in rural Kenya, and offer 24-hour support and advice.
Placements
The opportunity to work in schools where there's the most need, and where you're most wanted.
We find you accommodation in the local area which we rent and furnish for you. It will be as good as we can get, made of mud, wood, or stone but will have a concerete floor. It will not have running water, electricity or an inside loo.
We'll also find a local housegirl who you will then employ. This is essential, because she will teach you how to live happily in rural Africa. You'll not know how to cook ugali on charcoal, and we don't want you wasting time fetching water.
We prefer placements of six months, normally starting in January, but can be flexible. VAEs work in pairs - do you have someone in mind?
Support and Advice
VAE is deliberately small and employs local staff so that we can give you individual attention.
We will collect you from the airport and give you a several-day induction that will cover all aspects of living and working in Kenya. What makes VAE unique is that because we are locally-based we can give you a lot of ongoing support, either at our base or whilst you're in school. We also run a training session so that you can travel safely.
Travel
Obviously during the holidays you'll want to see as much of Kenya as possible. We welcome this! We can help with your ideas and plans.
