The Green House
Located in the centre of the schools we serve, the Green House acts as a home, office and focal point for all VAE's related activities. This is where you come when you first arrive.
The house is 9km from Gilgil, and about 120km north-west of Nairobi, reached by tarmac and then very rough road. It's set in similar country to where you'll be working and is the centre of its community.
The Green House has staff accommodation, stores and a workshop from where local carpenters whom we support make a lot of the furniture for the schools.
It has just got nearly-permanent electricity, is primitively furnished but it is clean, safe and fairly comfortable.
The Green House is much more than just a home and and office. It's also a security net for African and European alike. It's a place where street kids can mix with volunteers, where donors talk to teachers and where parties, lectures and workshops are held.
Parents
The Green House is also the place where your parents or visitors can stay. It may seem anathema now to have them checking up on you, but in fact you'll probably want to show them how incredibly tough you are and how essential you are to your school. We welcome this and so will your school.
We are happy to let the main part of the house to your parents, along with staff, should they wish to be independent and stay in the Gilgil area for a few nights.
Staying here they will be able to talk with the VAE team, and get a real insight into the work you and VAE does, including no doubt meeting some characters from the area.
Whatever their plans, we are happy to advise them.
Now find out what you learn from VAE...
